Bas was appointed Director General for Immigration Enforcement at the Home Office in November 2023, following a long and varied career in public service. Born to Pakistani immigrants, he was raised in several locations across the UK and speaks a number of languages. Bas joined the Royal Navy in March 1988 as a helicopter engineer and served during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. He joined Avon and Somerset Police in November 1993 and held a number of operational leadership roles during his policing career, including detective chief inspector in Coventry, superintendent in Sandwell and chief superintendent in Solihull. He later joined the Metropolitan Police Service, where he served as Commander for Frontline Policing in London before becoming Deputy Assistant Commissioner for Professionalism from March 2021 to November 2023. Bas has studied criminology and has made academic contributions to the field. He has also served on the Board of Governors at Sandwell College. Outside of work, his interests include motorcycling, aviation, exercise and cooking.
