The Food Standards Agency has issued a Food Alert for Action following the discovery of Salmonella Enteritidis in eggs imported from a Ukrainian supplier. The contaminated eggs, which have been traced to 36 confirmed cases of Salmonella infection in England during 2026, are being withdrawn from supply chains across catering businesses, wholesalers and small retailers, though they do not appear to have reached major supermarkets. The FSA's investigation, supported by whole genome sequencing from the UK Health Security Agency, determined that while the strain does not match outbreak strains currently under investigation, it presents a clear public health risk. Consumers who have purchased affected products are advised to dispose of them rather than consume them.
The Prime Minister spoke with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 10 October following what Downing Street described as a "difficult" 24 hours for Ukraine, reiterating British solidarity and committing to continued military and financial support. The two leaders emphasised the need to maintain sanctions pressure on Russia and pressed for an energy ceasefire to halt attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and shipping in the Black Sea, arguing that such a move would immediately boost global energy and food supplies. The government's position, articulated in a statement responding to reported US-Russia negotiations, is unambiguous: the UK will sustain its support for Ukraine "for as long as it takes" whilst working with international partners toward a durable peace. The Prime Minister and President agreed to meet in person in the coming days to continue discussions.
The Ministry of Defence and QinetiQ have launched Project Safari, a joint initiative designed to dismantle bureaucratic barriers that have historically slowed the adoption of new defence technologies by smaller companies. The programme grants small and medium-sized enterprises faster, more straightforward access to the UK's sovereign test and evaluation facilities, removing the requirement for multiple layers of approval that have traditionally delayed the progression of innovations from development to deployment. Technologies including hypersonic missiles, directed energy weapons and autonomous systems will now be assessed and refined at accelerated pace, aligning testing timelines with the velocity of modern warfare. The initiative supports the government's Strategic Defence Review commitment to invest an additional £2.5 billion annually in SME support by 2028.
England has recorded 2,709 confirmed cases of bluetongue serotype 3 (BTV-3) in the 2026 to 2027 season, with a further 64 premises confirmed on 9 October alone spanning counties from Cornwall to North Yorkshire. Wales and Scotland have recorded 478 and 48 cases respectively, whilst Northern Ireland remains unaffected. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs reports that of the 64 new cases, 40 were confirmed as BTV-3, with 22 involving sheep and 18 involving cattle, whilst a further 23 cases awaited serotype confirmation. The disease now represents a significant challenge to livestock farming across much of southern and central England, with the government urging vigilance and immediate reporting of suspected cases.
The government's Cladding Safety Scheme, delivered through Homes England, closed its application window on 9 October for funding to address fire safety risks in buildings under 11 metres. The scheme, launched in July 2026 as part of the Remediation Acceleration Plan, adopted a risk-based prioritisation approach, with preference given to buildings presenting high life-critical cladding fire safety risks. The ministry maintains that buildings under 11 metres are statistically less likely to harbour widespread cladding fire safety issues, though funding was made available where professional Fire Risk Appraisals of External Walls had identified genuine hazards. Applications submitted before the deadline will now be assessed against published eligibility criteria.
