The North East showed the most buoyant monthly movement at 1 per cent, whilst the East Midlands recorded the largest monthly fall at 0.7 per cent. The South East, historically the second-strongest market, grew just 0.3 per cent annually. The Prime Minister has ordered a comprehensive crackdown on criminal gangs running illegal waste sites, uniting government agencies, regulators, police, and local authorities under a reformed partnership structure. The initiative combines enforcement measures — including expanded use of drones, increased Environment Agency personnel, greater involvement from the National Crime Agency, and a tenfold increase in fines from £300 to £5,000 — with remediation funding to clean three of the country's worst illegal dumps. The Trade Remedies Authority has recommended, and the government has accepted, provisional anti-dumping measures against boom lift imports from China, effective from 20 August. The decision protects UK manufacturers, particularly Milton Keynes-based Niftylift Limited, from what the TRA found to be dumped imports sold at artificially depressed prices. Boom lifts — colloquially known as cherry pickers — are essential equipment across construction and infrastructure sectors, including stadium maintenance and broadcasting.
