Four warships—HMS Somerset, HMS Tyne, HMS Mersey, and HMS Severn—were deployed alongside Wildcat helicopters and Merlin submarine-hunting aircraft to track Russian warships and submarines. The scale of this effort reflects a structural shift in naval operations: across the first seven months of 2026, Royal Navy activations to monitor Russian activity have jumped 25 per cent compared with the same period last year. The Ministry of Defence specifically highlighted the Russian frigate Neustrashimy, which has repeatedly transited UK waters escorting sanctioned shadow fleet tankers, a practice that consumes significant operational resources on the British side.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs released updated figures showing the bluetongue serotype 3 outbreak is gathering momentum across livestock farms, with 51 new confirmed cases in England reported on 7 August alone. The 2026–27 season has now seen 270 cases of BTV-3 across Great Britain, concentrated heavily in southwest England: Devon accounts for 153 cases, Cornwall 55, and Somerset 41. Of the latest batch, 45 cases involved sheep and six cattle, all presenting clinical signs consistent with previous infections. Notably, no cases of the more serious serotype 8 variant have been detected this season, nor have any cases reached Scotland or Northern Ireland. The government is funding diagnostic testing for suspect animals, though the pace of new detections in Devon and Cornwall suggests the vector—likely the Culicoides midge—remains active across the region as summer conditions persist.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards has refreshed its consolidated lists of designated standards for both machinery and personal protective equipment, following routine publication notices from the Department for Business and Trade. These updates support the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 and EU Regulation 425/2016 as retained in domestic law. The notices represent administrative housekeeping rather than substantive policy change, providing businesses with current reference materials for compliance. Earlier notices dating from 2021 remain available through the National Archives for historical reference.
